Kendrick ColemanKendrick Coleman, CPA, a staff accountant in the Entrepreneurial Services Group at RubinBrown, was recently honored with the Southern Illinois University (SIU) Emerging Saluki Leader Award (ESLA) at the annual College of Business Homecoming Reception on October 13.

The ESLA recognizes alumni of the SIU College of Business who have graduated within the previous 15 years and are deserving of recognition for their outstanding achievements in business, academia, government, nonprofit organizations or service to their community. Honorees were chosen by the college’s external advisory boards based on outstanding achievements at the early stages in their careers.

“Kendrick has had an incredible year of accomplishments and truly deserves this recognition,” said John Herber, Chairman and Managing Partner, RubinBrown. “From his work ethic to his leadership and service efforts throughout the St. Louis community, Kendrick embodies the RubinBrown values. We could not be more proud of his achievements.”

Coleman started his career at RubinBrown as an intern and was hired on as a full-time employee in 2012. In his role, Coleman manages and coordinates the planning and performing of reviews, compilations and tax planning for clients. He prepares financial statements and federal, state and local tax returns for the transportation and dealership industry.

He was selected to represent RubinBrown as a member of the St. Louis Business Diversity Initiative, an exclusive group that brings together minority professionals for leadership training. In this role, Coleman is learning how to build a successful diversity and inclusion program that he can then implement at RubinBrown to help attract, retain and advance talented, minority employees.

One of Coleman’s passions is mentoring minority youth. He volunteers with InSight St. Louis, a non-profit organization dedicated to recruiting students from historically black colleges and universities to the St. Louis region to live and work. He is a part of the organization’s Career Exploration Trip, where he helps minority students learn and develop interviewing skills, and helps connect them to companies and place them in careers in the St. Louis area.

Additionally, he is involved with the Accounting Career Awareness Program, a partnership between the National Association of Black Accountants and Harris Stowe University in St. Louis. Coleman works with local high school students to mentor them on career paths and expose them to jobs in the accounting and financial industry. He sets up opportunities for these students to tour different accounting firms and Fortune 500 companies in the St. Louis area, as a way to get them excited and thinking about college and careers after high school. He uses his own background and career success as an example of what these students can accomplish.

Coleman serves as a Student Liaison for the Central Region Student Conference of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), and is the immediate past treasurer of the St. Louis Chapter of NABA. For the past two years, he has also served on the NAACP East St. Louis executive committee, where he plans and operates in an accounting role for the annual banquet fundraiser. Additionally, Coleman is a member of the United Way Charmaine Chapman Leadership Society, one of the largest African American giving societies. Along with his monetary contributions, he also sat on a focus group panel to help develop a plan to get more black youth involved and started a mentorship program with CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.

Coleman is a certified public accountant in Missouri and Illinois. He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a Master of Accountancy – Taxation from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
